Changing Gears Poker Strategy
What's the one advantage you always have over every person you play
poker with? What's the most important thing in making sure you have
a chance of making money? The fact that nobody else knows the two
cards you are holding. (Unless you are playing with Daniel Negraneu)
You would not be able to win money if your cards where always face
up. Therefore you must do everything in your power to safeguard the
secrecy of your cards. The first thing you must do is eliminate
your tells. This can only be done with nerves and countless hours
of live practice. The other thing you must do is learn how to
change gears.
Changing gears refers to changing up your style of play
periodically to throw off your opponents mindset of how you play.
If you play tight for a while, then aggressive, then super
aggressive, and then go back to playing tight, nobody at the table
is going to have a clue as to what you are playing. Good poker
players are going to be able to read you like a book if they can
correctly determine your style of play. Once you learn the basics
of changing gears, you will realize you have to use this style in
the most random way possible. Anything you do repetitively in poker
will be a tell when going against good players. Try not to switch
it up the same way in a tournament. Do your best to keep the rest
of the table on their heels.
When you learn how to properly and effectively change gears,
you will find you play much more enjoyable and profitable. It's
another form of play for you to employ in an effort to make you the
best player you can be.
