The Importance of Live Poker Table Etiquette

There really aren't too many rules when playing online poker.  The people you are playing against can't see you, therefore you can get away with pretty much anything you want, from yelling at the screen to having major tells in the way you react.  This is completely opposite in a live game.  In my opinion, your table image is one of the most important components of live poker to learn.

If you are new to the live game scene, take it from someone who thrives off of it: you do not want to be "that" person.  If you sit down at a live game and look like you haven't got a clue as to what is going on, the experienced players at the game will pick you apart.  If need be, sit back and watch for a while to get the rules and the game play down.  Then remember these things when you sit down to play.

1)  Don't be the person that makes everyone at the table mad.  It's fine to chat a little bit and crack jokes, but don't attack anyone.  There is no need to make enemies at the poker table.

2)  Don't talk about a hand while it is still being played.  Table talk is a big taboo in card rooms and casinos, so try to keep quiet until the hand is completed.

3)  Pay attention to the game and don't cause any unnecessary delays.  Act when it is your turn to act, otherwise you will become a nuisance to the table.

4)  Try your best to keep your chips organized, and don't look clumsy when handling them.  Maintain stacks so you know how much you have at all times.  When making a bet, announce it and stack the chips so your bet is clearly seen by the dealer and the other players.

5)  Finally, you should look at the poker game as a second job.  You are there to make money, so act like it.  It is perfectly fine to have fun, but don't lose focus on the main objective.  It is always more enjoyable to walk away a winner in the end.
